Making UK driving test preparation accessible through localization

Many learners especially immigrants and non-native English speakers struggle with understanding driving theory content and navigating the booking process. Passpoint removes this barrier by combining localized learning, smart test-slot discovery, and a simplified booking hub connected to official DVSA services.

My Role

I owned the design end-to-end. I worked closely with the stakeholder and developer to conceptualise and implement Passpoint products steering the project from ideation to successful beta launch.

My responsibilities included driving strategic conceptualisation and feature prioritisation, overseeing the design of key features, developing a robust design system for subsequent iterations, and designing marketing and brand assets for launch

Localization & Learning Experience

One of Passpoint’s standout features is its localization first learning experience, which I designed to help learners study for their driving tests in the language they’re most comfortable with. Recognising that language barriers are a major challenge for many users, I introduced two key features to support clearer understanding and better retention:

Dual-Language Learning: Users can switch between English and a chosen secondary language per question, allowing them to understand official exam terminology while learning in familiar terms.

Post-Test Personal Notes: After completing a practice test, users can add personal notes to capture important words, rules, or explanations in their own language. This supports reflection and long-term recall, and is intentionally separate from the flag feature used for revisiting questions.

Together, these features make learning more accessible, personal, and confidence-building helping users focus on progress rather than translation.

Booking & Test Management

Building on Passpoint’s goal of reducing friction throughout the driving test journey, we recognised that booking and managing tests is often the most stressful part for learners especially when navigating official government platforms.
Rather than attempting to replace the DVSA process, I designed a Booking Hub that clearly guides users to the right actions while maintaining transparency and trust. From booking theory and practical tests to rescheduling or cancelling appointments, users are redirected to the official DVSA website through clearly labelled actions, supported by relevant terms, conditions, and DVSA contact information.

Finding an earlier test slot

One of the biggest frustrations for learners is waiting months for a practical test date. Passpoint addresses this by helping users find earlier available slots based on their existing bookings.
I designed this flow to feel supportive rather than automated. Users stay informed, in control, and connected to the booking process without feeling like they’re navigating it alone.
